Slavery within the state has been abolished and afterward, it came to be known as A FREE STATE. This name was given in 1919 when congress passed a law prohibiting the sale and use of alcohol. Marylander’s opposed banning because they thought that it was against their rights. This nickname of “FREE STATE” represents the tradition of political freedom and religious tolerance.
